Embrace your luxurious side—and choose velvet this fall
by Janet Longe, of 23rd [and Fourth]
From the way it looks, to the way it feels, velvet is pure luxury. But that doesn’t mean you need to reserve it for formal sitting areas, dining rooms and cocktail dresses. When used smartly—and in the right hue—it can work almost anywhere.
Velvet upholstery can be transformative, so your sofa won’t just feel like a dream, it will look like one, too. The simple addition can take any piece of furniture and elevate it significantly, giving a much-needed boost to a traditional chair, loveseat, bench, or ottoman. Opt for rich, saturated hues in jewel tones—think sapphire blues, emerald greens, bold purples and deep pinks—to evoke a sense of royalty, and harken back to centuries of old.
But don’t overdo it. Remember, moderation is best. Choose one piece per room and do it well, so you’ll love it for a lifetime.
Looking to take a small leap, not a bold jump? Draperies and accent pieces—a vanity stool or side chair, perhaps—are a gorgeous alternative, and you can even apply it direct to your walls, via flocked wallpaper! Some velvet can also be treated against stains, so you can be adventurous, without the added worry.
